Get to Know Coach Kriese
Chuck Kriese was the tennis coach at Clemson University for 33 years and retired from there in 2008. At Clemson he became the ‘winningest coach in Atlantic Coast Conference History’ with 685 victories. His teams won 10 ACC titles and finished in the NCAA ‘Elite 8’ seven, and had 16 top 10 finishes. His 36 years of collegiate coaching produced 36 All-Americans and 4 national Sr. Players of the year. Eleven of Chuck’s players have risen to top 100 spots in the ATP and WTA adult tour as well, and 30+ have achieved world rankings. He has returned to collegiate coaching ranks at The Citadel in 2013. As a coach, he has been inducted into 4 Hall-of-fames including: National Collegiate Tennis; Clemson University Athletic; South Carolina Tennis and Tennessee Tech Athletic Hall-of-fames.
During his coaching tenure, Kriese has also been named to 4 national-coach-of-the-year awards. He has also coached Junior Players to nine (9) Grand-Slam finals as his players have won 5 Grand-Slam championships. Chuck coached the first Asian player in history to win a ‘Grand-Slam’ event when Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand won the Girls Singles and Doubles Championships at Wimbledon in 2009. By also Winning US Open and French Open Doubles Titles, she finished that year ranked #1 in the world in Junior Tennis.
He is a former USA national Coach; A former United States Junior Davis Cup Coach and has also served as Technical Director for the 10 country zone of Southeast Asia Tennis. He has authored four published tennis books and has co-authored 2 others on Clemson sports history. Over 15,000 youngsters have attended his summer training camps over the past 40 years. He has conducted seminars for players and coaches in 17 countries on 4 continents. He continues to teach, coach, write and give motivational speeches on leadership training for coaches and young people. He also hosts ‘American Tennis Radio Show’ each week.
Chuck is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Cathedral HS where he earned 10 Varsity Prep-Letters in Tennis, Basketball and Cross-Country. Chuck earned his Undergraduate and Master’s Degrees from Tennessee Tech University. Chuck is married to former Claire Cummings Williams of Charleston and is the proud father of 6 children and 2 grandchildren.
